This makes container shipping accessible even for buyers who wouldn't otherwise justify a sole-use box for a single car.

On a Southampton-to-Dubai lane, a sole-use 40ft container might cost £3,200–£3,800 total. Split three ways between similarly sized vehicles, each shipper pays roughly £1,100–£1,350 — cheaper than many RoRo quotes on the same route, while retaining the security benefits of container shipping.

Most established forwarders maintain a network of regular groupage routes and can match your vehicle with others heading to the same destination within a similar timeframe, often within one to three weeks of your preferred ship date. Popular consolidation lanes include the UK to Ghana, Kenya, and the UAE, where volume is high enough to fill containers regularly.

The main downside is scheduling flexibility — your container won't depart until it's full or a departure deadline is reached, which can occasionally mean a wait of one to two extra weeks compared with a guaranteed RoRo sailing date. There's also shared liability for delays: if one co-loaded vehicle's paperwork isn't ready, the whole container can be held, risking storage charges for everyone.

Shared containers deliver the best value when shipping two or more vehicles from the same seller, or when your destination has known port security risks that make RoRo less appealing but a sole-use container feels like overkill for a mid-value car.
