Shared vs Dedicated Container Shipping: Which Is Right for You?

A detailed comparison of shared and dedicated container shipping — helping you choose the right option for your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Is my vehicle safe in a shared container?

Absolutely. Vehicles in shared containers are professionally secured with the same methods used in dedicated containers. Each vehicle is individually strapped and chocked.

Can I choose who shares my container?

No, shared container partners are allocated by the logistics provider based on vehicle size and destination. All vehicles are fully insured regardless of configuration.

How long does shared container shipping take?

Ocean transit times are the same as dedicated containers. However, shared containers may take 1–2 weeks longer to depart as all vehicle slots need to be filled.

Can I share a container with friends or family heading to the same destination?

Yes — this is called a 'private consolidation' and is the cheapest possible container option. Two vehicles in a 20ft or 3-4 in a 40ft, sole consignee. You skip the public co-loader risk and split freight evenly. We arrange the paperwork as a single booking with split delivery instructions.

If my shared container is delayed, can I claim compensation?

Marine carriers exclude liability for transit delays under the Hague-Visby Rules. Most consolidator contracts also exclude consequential loss. Practical recourse is limited to insurance riders covering 'delay in start-up' (rare for personal moves) or a goodwill credit from the consolidator. Build a 10-14 day buffer into any deadline.
