Vehicle imports to Abu Dhabi are regulated by the Federal Customs Authority, the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) and the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate. The rules are reasonably permissive compared to neighbouring Saudi Arabia, but several conditions must be met before your vehicle can be registered locally.

Vehicle age — Abu Dhabi accepts most vehicles regardless of age, though insurance and finance options narrow significantly for cars more than 10 years old. Genuine classic and antique vehicles (over 30 years old) qualify for a special heritage classification with reduced duties.

GCC specification — Vehicles built to GCC specification clear most easily because they are designed for the Gulf climate, with uprated cooling, sand filtration and high-temperature air conditioning. UK or European spec cars are still importable as personal effects, but expect additional inspection and possible compliance work.

Left-hand drive preferred — The UAE drives on the right. Right-hand-drive vehicles can be imported for personal use, but cannot be commercially resold to UAE residents. Many British classic cars are imported as RHD with this restriction in mind.

Once your vehicle arrives at Khalifa Port the clearance process generally takes 4 to 8 working days, assuming all paperwork is correct. The Ship Cars handles each step in partnership with bonded customs agents in Abu Dhabi.

1. Manifest verification — Your Bill of Lading is presented to Abu Dhabi Customs and reconciled with the vessel manifest.
