RoRo vs Container Shipping: Which Is Better for Your Car?

Container shipping seals your vehicle inside a locked steel box, invisible and inaccessible until it reaches the destination and is opened by you or your agent. RoRo vehicles sit on open decks and pass through more hands during loading and unloading. For destinations with a known history of port theft or tampering — parts of West Africa and some Gulf transhipment hubs — container shipping's security advantage often outweighs the extra cost.

Container costs become more competitive when multiple vehicles are shipped together, splitting the box's fixed handling and freight costs.

Classic cars, modified vehicles, and anything with a high market value benefit most from container shipping's protection from salt spray, weather, and physical contact with other vehicles. Standard, mass-market saloons and SUVs travelling to well-established, lower-risk RoRo lanes (Western Europe, most of North America) are well served by RoRo without any meaningful compromise.

RoRo services generally run more frequent, fixed schedules on major trade lanes, so booking flexibility is often better. Container shipments, particularly shared containers, depend on the shipper filling the box, which can occasionally add a few days' wait before departure if demand on that route is low.

If you need to ship personal effects or extra luggage alongside the vehicle, container shipping offers considerably more flexibility, since the sealed space can accommodate boxed goods around and inside the vehicle without exposure risk, whereas RoRo carriers strictly limit what can travel inside a vehicle.

As a rule of thumb: choose RoRo for standard vehicles on well-trodden, secure routes where cost matters most; choose container shipping for high-value cars, higher-risk destinations, or when shipping personal effects alongside the vehicle.
