Freight is almost never the deciding factor for a Singapore import — the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) is. Every vehicle registered in Singapore requires a COE bid through the Land Transport Authority's open bidding system, and prices for Category A/B COEs have regularly exceeded SGD 90,000-100,000 (roughly £53,000-£59,000) in recent bidding rounds. This single cost typically dwarfs the vehicle's purchase price and shipping combined, which is why importing a personal UK car to Singapore is rarely economical compared with buying locally.

On top of the COE, Singapore levies an Additional Registration Fee (ARF) calculated as a tiered percentage of the vehicle's Open Market Value, starting at 100% for the first SGD 20,000 and rising to 220% for value above SGD 80,000. A standard 20% GST also applies to the CIF value at import. Combined, these charges mean a mid-range UK car with an OMV of £20,000 could face well over £40,000 in Singapore-specific taxes before the COE is even added.

Vehicles must meet the Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) standards and pass LTA technical inspection before registration. Left-hand or right-hand drive is not an issue since Singapore drives on the left, but the car must be less than three years old at the point of registration under LTA's used-vehicle import rules for most categories, ruling out older UK stock entirely for personal import.

Given the COE and ARF structure, shipping to Singapore is really only cost-effective for specialist, rare or classic vehicles that fall under exemptions, or for vehicles in transit to other Southeast Asian markets using Singapore as a transhipment hub.
