Import a Car from the USA to the UK

Importing from the United States is the most common reverse route we run. Sail from New York, Baltimore, Jacksonville or Galveston into Southampton or Tilbury, pay 10% import duty plus 20% VAT on the landed CIF value, complete an IVA test if the vehicle is under 10 years old, and register on a UK plate with the DVLA.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the total cost to import a Dodge Challenger from the USA?

A £35k Challenger from New York costs roughly £1,150 RoRo + £3,500 duty + £7,000 VAT + £456 IVA + £55 DVLA = around £47,000 on UK plates.

Are 25-year-old cars exempt from duty or VAT?

No. Age alone does not exempt UK import duty or VAT. Classic cars (30+ years, original spec) qualify for reduced 5% VAT and zero duty under commodity code 9705 00 00.

Do I need an IVA test for every US car?

Only if the vehicle is under 10 years old at the time of UK registration. Older cars are registered on a V55/5 with age-related plates.

Which is cheaper, RoRo or container?

RoRo from the East Coast is the cheapest at around £1,150. Container is £500–£2,800 more but accepts non-runners and personal effects.
