Port Storage Fees at UK Export Ports: What Happens Before Your Car Sails

While much attention goes to destination-port storage charges, UK export terminals such as Southampton and Tilbury also charge storage if a vehicle is dropped off well ahead of its confirmed sailing date and sits in the compound taking up space. Most terminals allow vehicles to arrive 3–5 days before the sailing cut-off free of charge, but earlier drop-offs can attract daily storage of £8–£15.

Every RoRo sailing has a booking cut-off, usually 24–72 hours before departure, by which the vehicle must be physically in the compound and its documentation finalised. Arriving after the cut-off risks missing the vessel entirely and being rolled to the next sailing, which for some destinations can mean a two- to four-week wait. Coordinate drop-off timing closely with your forwarder rather than delivering the vehicle as soon as it's ready.

If a vehicle misses its booked vessel due to late paperwork, a failed inspection, or a documentation query, it will typically sit in the compound accruing storage until the next available sailing, and you may also be charged a rebooking fee of £50–£150 by the carrier.

For most standard car shipments, UK-side storage rarely becomes a major cost if drop-off is coordinated properly — budget £0 if delivered within the free window, rising to £40–£100 total if a vehicle sits for an extra week due to a missed sailing or paperwork hold-up. Larger or oversized vehicles occupying more compound space can attract higher daily rates.

Always confirm the exact drop-off window with your shipping agent, have your V5C, export invoice, and any required marine insurance certificate ready before delivery, and avoid dropping the vehicle off 'to be safe' more than a week early — it rarely saves time and can cost you unnecessarily.
