Lost or Misplaced Vehicle in Shipping: What Actually Happens

Vehicles rarely get lost in international shipping. When they do, here's what happens — recovery process, insurance claim and prevention.

Frequently asked questions

Has The Ship Cars ever lost a vehicle?

Across 18,000+ shipments since 2006 we have had three total-loss events (all vessel fires or sinkings, all fully recovered through marine insurance) and roughly 40 mis-routing incidents (all recovered within 5-21 days). No vehicle has ever been permanently lost.

What's General Average?

A maritime principle from the 1890s: if the captain jettisons or salvages cargo to save the vessel, all cargo on board shares the cost pro-rata. Cargo insurance pays your share automatically.

Can I track my own container?

Yes — every shipment includes the container ISO number, vessel name and bill of lading on Day 1. Track at the line's website (Maersk, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, etc) or MarineTraffic for the vessel itself.
