Importing a Car to the UAE from the UK: Duty, Emirates ID and Inspection Rules

Vehicles shipped from the UK to the UAE almost always arrive at Jebel Ali Port near Dubai, the region's main RoRo and container hub. Sailings depart from Southampton and Tilbury, with transit times of around 18–24 days for RoRo and 20–28 days for container shipping via the Mediterranean and Suez Canal. Container shipping is popular for higher-value cars and classics, since it protects the vehicle from sand and salt exposure typical of Gulf ports.

Abu Dhabi-bound vehicles are usually shipped to Jebel Ali and transported overland, as it remains the busiest and most cost-efficient gateway for UK exporters.

This is the single biggest obstacle for UK owners: the UAE does not permit registration of right-hand drive vehicles for road use, even temporarily. Only left-hand drive cars can be registered, so a standard UK-market car cannot simply be shipped and driven in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Exceptions exist for vintage vehicles over 30 years old imported for classic car shows or private collections, which may be granted non-road-use status, but everyday right-hand drive imports are effectively blocked. Buyers wanting to relocate a UK car to the UAE should check left-hand vs right-hand drive import rules before booking shipping.

For eligible left-hand drive imports, UAE customs duty is a flat 5% of the vehicle's assessed CIF value, among the lowest in the world. A 5% VAT also applies on the duty-inclusive value. There is no separate excise duty on standard passenger cars, though large-displacement luxury vehicles may attract additional registration fees at emirate level.

Every imported vehicle must pass a technical inspection at an approved centre before Emirates registration is issued — checking chassis number matching, emissions, safety equipment, and tinted-window compliance (UAE limits window tint darkness). The Dubai RTA and Abu Dhabi equivalent conduct these checks, and vehicles failing on tint, modified exhausts, or aftermarket lighting must be brought back to factory specification before a pass certificate is issued.

To register a vehicle, the owner needs a valid Emirates ID and UAE residency visa; tourists and non-residents cannot register vehicles in their own name. Once the technical inspection is passed and duty paid, registration is completed through the relevant emirate's RTA or Traffic Department, and Emirati number plates are issued. Insurance must be arranged locally before plates are released — UK marine insurance does not extend to on-road cover in the UAE.

For an eligible left-hand drive vehicle, budget £1,300–£1,900 for RoRo or container freight from Southampton to Jebel Ali, plus 5% customs duty and 5% VAT on the assessed value. Technical inspection and registration fees typically add £150–£300. Always confirm eligibility for road registration before shipping — freight and inspection fees are non-refundable if the vehicle is later refused registration.
