Vehicle Storage Before Export: Keeping Your Car Safe Pre-Shipment

Container and RORO sailing slots often need booking 2–6 weeks ahead, and buyers relocating abroad rarely have their moving date align perfectly with a shipping schedule. Add in visa processing, house sales or job start dates, and it's common to need somewhere secure to keep a car for anywhere from a few days to several months before it heads to the port. Leaving a vehicle on a driveway or street for an extended period is rarely a good idea — insurance implications and security risk both increase the longer a car sits unused and unmonitored.

Most freight forwarders and shipping agents offer, or can recommend, secure compound storage near the departure port (Southampton, Tilbury, Sheerness) — typically CCTV-monitored, fenced sites charging £3–£8 per day depending on vehicle size and duration discount. Storing at the port compound close to your sailing date is convenient and reduces last-mile transport costs, but it's not always the cheapest for longer stays; independent secure storage facilities inland can be £2–£5 per day for month-plus bookings.

Standard UK motor insurance may not cover a vehicle sitting unused for extended periods, and many insurers offer a cheaper 'laid up' or SORN-equivalent storage policy covering fire, theft and third-party risks without the driving element. If you've already notified DVLA of export intent, the vehicle technically shouldn't be driven on public roads, so a static storage/transit insurance policy — often arranged through the shipping company or a specialist broker — is the correct cover, typically costing £50–£150 for a month depending on vehicle value.

For storage beyond about three weeks, disconnect or trickle-charge the battery to prevent it draining completely, leave the fuel tank around a quarter full (enough to avoid condensation issues but not so full it's a fire risk or excess weight for shipping), and apply the handbrake with wheel chocks rather than leaving it engaged for months, which can cause the pads to seize to the discs. If storing outdoors, a breathable car cover reduces UV and moisture damage without trapping condensation the way a plastic tarpaulin would.

Keep your V5C, service history, purchase invoice and any export paperwork together and accessible — not locked in the car itself, since compounds sometimes require documents presented separately at the gate for security checks. If DVLA export notification is already filed, retain proof of that alongside your booking confirmation, as some compounds and ports require evidence the vehicle is legitimately export-bound before accepting it into secure storage.

For a standard family car: one week of port-adjacent secure storage costs roughly £25–£55; one month runs £90–£240 depending on facility and vehicle size; and storage beyond two months is usually better value at an inland facility, working out to £60–£150 per month with a long-stay discount. Always get a written quote covering insurance liability, access arrangements and any collection/delivery fee to the port before committing your vehicle to a compound.
