Shipping Heavy Machinery Overseas from the UK: Complete Guide

How to ship excavators, bulldozers, tractors, and other heavy plant equipment from the UK to destinations worldwide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ship a non-running excavator overseas?

Yes. Non-running machinery can be shipped via flat rack or container using crane loading. RORO requires the machine to be self-propelled or towable.

Do I need to drain fluids from machinery before shipping?

Yes. All fluids must be reduced to minimum safe levels. Some shipping lines require a certificate confirming the machine has been drained.

What is the heaviest machinery you can ship?

There is no strict upper limit. We've shipped machinery weighing over 100 tonnes via RORO and breakbulk. Contact us with your specific requirements.

Do I need to clean my machinery before shipping?

Thorough cleaning is essential, especially for destinations with strict biosecurity (Australia, New Zealand). Soil and organic matter must be completely removed.

Do I need an export licence for construction plant?

Standard civil plant (excavators, loaders, telehandlers, dumpers) requires no UK export licence to civil destinations. Specialist or dual-use equipment (military-spec armoured plant, certain demolition robots) may fall under the Export Control Order 2008 and require an OGEL or SIEL — check with the Export Control Joint Unit before booking.

Can I ship plant with fuel in the tank?

Maximum 1/4 tank for diesel plant on RORO and breakbulk. Hydraulic systems may stay charged. LPG/CNG tanks must be drained and certified empty. Batteries are isolated but stay onboard. Always declare fuel level — vessels reject overfilled machines at the gate.
